Time in the Futūḥāt

A reading route beginning with chapter 59 and following terms and relationships in context.

A defined starting point: chapter 59

The Arabic heading concerns al-zamān al-mawjūd wa-l-muqaddar: time described as existing and estimated or posited, with the precise sense to be examined in context. The volume 4 index locates it before the next chapter on the elements. Read this chapter as a unit before collecting scattered search results.

Build a vocabulary record

Record the terms you actually encounter, such as zamān, azal, or yawm, with their sentence and reference. Ask whether a statement concerns measurement, relation, or ordering, and to what its language applies. These are organizing questions, not an assumption that each term has one meaning everywhere.

The following indexed heading concerns the relation of azal to God and of time to us. Use it to locate and read the complete passage. An index heading helps retrieval but does not replace the text or by itself establish a particular philosophical interpretation.

Extend the reading

  1. Summarize the chapter while separating its wording from your explanation.
  2. Search one term throughout the text and open results from different chapters.
  3. Compare context, pronouns, and subject before combining the results.
  4. Examine available translation choices and retain unresolved alternatives.

You can later compare this material with modern philosophical or scientific studies, identifying each interpreter and their assumptions. This guide instead builds a documented textual record: location, expression, stated relationship, and open question. It does not attribute modern equations to the author. Use the Cairo–Konya guide when a particular passage becomes central to your argument.
