Names, titles and spelling

How to identify the author of the Futūḥāt across Arabic and other languages.

Ibn al-ʿArabī and Ibn ʿArabī

This section follows ibnalarabi.com’s preference for the Arabic form Ibn al-ʿArabī. Ibn ʿArabī is also common in catalogues and modern editions. These forms need not refer to different people: use both when searching a library catalogue or database.

Identification and honorifics

His personal name is Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī; al-Ḥātimī and al-Ṭāʾī belong to his lineage designations. Muḥyī al-Dīn and al-Shaykh al-Akbar, the Greatest Master, are familiar titles. Other honorifics express his standing among admirers. Separate identifying names from devotional titles and book titles to avoid creating duplicate records.

Avoiding mistaken identities

Distinguish the author of the Futūḥāt from the Mālikī jurist Abū Bakr Ibn al-ʿArabī. European spellings include Ibn ʿArabī, Ibn al-ʿArabī and Muhyiddin; Turkish uses forms such as İbnü'l-Arabî. Add the dates 1165–1240 or the title Futūḥāt when checking authorship. In a bibliography, retain the form used by the edition consulted.
